Frequently Asked Questions
How do you reverse-calculate sales tax?
Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1 plus the tax rate (as a decimal). Example: $107 paid at 7% tax → $107 ÷ 1.07 = $100 pre-tax price, so $7 was tax. The calculator does this instantly.
When would I need a reverse sales tax calculation?
Common cases: expensing a receipt that only shows the total, bookkeeping when the pre-tax price wasn't recorded, checking a bill for errors, or working in countries where shelf prices already include VAT/GST.
Does this work for VAT or GST too?
Yes — the math is identical. Enter the VAT/GST-inclusive total and the VAT/GST rate; the formula doesn't care what the tax is called.
What if the rate has multiple components?
Add them up first. If state tax is 6% and local tax is 1.5%, enter 7.5% as the combined rate.
